MPS steps up recruitment of bilingual teachers, math and science professionals

Even if Milwaukee Public Schools hired every person who graduated from a Wisconsin college with a teaching certificate between last December and August, it still wouldn’t have enough qualified teachers to fill an onslaught of expected vacancies this fall, according to new details from the district.

Instead, the district may need to turn to alternative streams – including recruiting bilingual teachers in Puerto Rico and Spain and training math and science professionals to become teachers – to fill the gap, according to a two-year recruitment and training initiative announced Thursday.

Recruitment events set to start as MPS seeks 700 new teachers

MILWAUKEE – Milwaukee Public Schools will hold five recruitment events starting this week as the district seeks to hire 700 new teachers as well as paraprofessionals and more than a dozen principals.

Qualified applicants who attend any teacher recruitment session could leave with a letter of intent to be hired by the district. At the March 2 district-wide recruitment event for teachers and paraprofessionals, early contracts may be offered.

Teacher recruitment initiative announced by Greater Milwaukee Committee

MPS moving forward to meet challenges

When I became superintendent of Milwaukee Public Schools in July 2010, I knew the district – like many other urban school districts – faced deep financial challenges. But I had confidence that the Board of School Directors, administration and staff understood the urgency and were committed to make tough decisions to secure the district’s financial future for the 79,000 students we serve.

An independent, third-party analysis of MPS finances released recently by the Public Policy Forum found the tough decisions made by the district over the past two years are showing signs of paying off. MPS’ fiscal condition has improved significantly, with savings of nearly $400 million. While much of the Public Policy Forum report focused on past years, the real story is the future of MPS and the continued efforts of the district to move forward to address additional fiscal challenges.
